I’ve always had this beauty section on my blog but I’ve never posted any content. That stops now. Here is the first of many more articles.
I’ve been researching about the beauty industry, it is so wide and the more I did my research, the more I learned and can’t wait to share with you. But for now, let’s talk about those bad habits that we need to stop!
The first one being the obvious makeup 101!
- Going to bed in make up.
I cannot even begin to list all the harmful results of this bad habit but here’s a few of them; you will break out, you will age faster, your complexion will appear dull, if you already have acne then you will make it worse etc. These are just a few of the risks of sleeping in makeup.
After doing an extensive research, I found these tips to be helpful.
Even if you’re super tired, wash your face before heading to bed — your skin will definitely thank you later. I’d recommend that you do it according to your skin type, although you should probably ask your dermatologist to help you figure out what’s right for you if you’re not sure.
Cleanse twice daily. At night, if you wear heavy makeup, start with a quick makeup wipe. If you have normal to dry skin, find a gentle cleanser to lift off impurities, makeup, and dirt. For oilier skin, look for exfoliating cleansers with alpha-hydroxy acids, and for acne-prone skin, consider a topical treatment that contains active ingredient dapsone.
- Over-exfoliating
I love exfoliating my whole body, not just my face. I have an exfoliating pair of gloves and cream too. Since I started practising this I have noticed an immense change in my skin texture.
Generally, my skin has really improved. But that doesn’t qualify for doing it daily. By exfoliating daily, you’re actually doing more harm than good. Your skin doesn’t like it, at all. It irritates it and soon enough, it will react accordingly.
If you are exfoliating the skin too often, the skin’s barrier function can become compromised, skin can become dehydrated and capillaries can become damaged. It can ultimately make acne worse.
So, let’s stop over doing it. The right amount of exfoliation will do just fine and that will be once a week.
- Not exfoliating at all
Children are the only people with skin that renews itself continuously, which is why their skin is usually incredibly soft and luminous. As we get older, our skin cells shed and renew themselves at a slower pace, leading to skin that looks dull and congested.
Adult skin that’s not regularly exfoliated may experience acne and more rapid visible ageing. It is often not very vibrant in tone, and easily becomes clogged with dirt, excess oil, and dead skin cells. Blackheads are also more likely to occur.
Worse, other skincare products (like serums and moisturizers) are unable to penetrate the skin, so non-exfoliating folks tend to end up with dry, irritated skin.
My dearest dear, just get that scrubbing cream or pair of scrubbing gloves, you will love the outcome.
- Matching your makeup to your outfit
This only works for neutrals like beige, black, gold etc. But if you’re wearing, say a purple please don’t wear purple eye shadow, if you’re wearing blue, don’t wear blue lipstick or eyeshadow.
It looks tacky and nobody wants to look tacky, at least not willingly. Think about complimenting your outfit instead of going all matchy-matchy.
For example, if you’re wearing blue, gold would be your best bet cause it’s kinda the opposite on the colour wheel.
The point is to think of the opposite colour cause they always compliment each other.
I do neutral and very minimal makeup, so this part for me is usually a no brainer. I don’t even think about it cause I know I will always choose neutral over bold solid colours unless otherwise. (By neutrals I mean, gold, brown, beige etc.)
But if you love colours then go for the opposite of what you’re wearing. When in doubt, refer to the colour wheel.
- Harsh lip liner lines
Trust me, you don’t want harsh lines on your face. Whether it’s your eyebrows or your contour or even your eyeshadow, you don’t want a harsh line or a visible transition of colors. You want a seamless flow, you want everything to look blended and smooth.
Unless clown is what you’re going for, then blend everything and make it consistent. Don’t use the lip liner to draw or harshly define your lips and leave it at that, that’s an old school trend that died a very long time ago.
Nowadays people blend it all, even though you’re wearing a different shade of lipstick, just blend it with your lip liner.
Although choosing the same colour of lip liner as your lipstick would be the best route, if you’re feeling experimental and adventurous and you want to try different shades, make sure to blend it.
I can’t wait to share more on this section of my blog. I’m excited and I wanna know what you think about today’s topic so leave a comment below, let’s talk.
